When running Partition Manager on a local nPartition, or when
connecting via WBEM to a remote
nPartition, the ability to perform configuration operations on a
complex is affected by the setting of the
nPartition Configuration Privilege. If the privilege is
unrestricted, all configuration operations are permitted. If
the privilege is restricted, then you will only be able to
perform operations that affect the local or remote nPartition, and no operation
that modifies the Stable Complex Configuration Data will be
permitted.
NOTE:
If the nPartition Configuration Privilege is restricted, you
can still use Partition Manager to make complex-wide configuration changes by
connecting to the service processor of the complex via IPMI over LAN.
You will need to provide the IPMI password for the service processor. See the
user authentication topic for more
information.
The default setting of the nPartition Configuration Privilege is
unrestricted. The setting can be changed by logging onto the
service processor and using the PARPERM command from the
Command Menu.
NOTE:
The nPartition Configuration Privilege does not control provisioning of
iCAP processors.
Purpose
The restricted setting is intended for use in environments
where different nPartitions are managed by different system administrators. The
system administrators need Administrator
(root) privileges on their own nPartitions, but are
restricted from making configuration changes that affect other nPartitions.
Complex-wide configuration changes can only be made by administrators with
the service processor IPMI password.
Restricted Operations
When the nPartition Configuration Privilege is restricted, the
following operations are not permitted from a local or remote nPartition.
Reconfigure the complex (any changes to the Stable Complex Configuration
Data, including adding or deleting nPartitions).
Reconfigure any other nPartition.
Power on or off cells or I/O
chassis that are not assigned to this nPartition.
Perform any I/O slot actions on an I/O
chassis that is not assigned to this nPartition.
Allowed Operations
The following operations can be performed from a local or remote nPartition even
when the nPartition Configuration Privilege is restricted.
Reconfigure this nPartition (modify its own Partition Configuration
Data). This does not include deleting the
nPartition, which is not allowed.
Retrieve all data about the complex and other nPartitions.
Acquire, release, or break a lock on any Complex Profile
data (including the Stable Complex Configuration Data and
Partition Configuration Data of another nPartition).
Power on or off the cells and I/O chassis assigned to this nPartition.
Turn on or off all cell, I/O chassis, and cabinet attention indicators in the
complex.
Perform any I/O slot actions on an I/O
chassis assigned to this nPartition.
