]]> Updating adapter firmware with rpm installed:

  • Install this NIC firmware rpm with the following command: rpm -ivh <rpm_filename>.rpm. 

This command will extract the contents to "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu."
The CPXXXXXX.scexe script is located in the "scexe-compat'' folder. Further information is available in CPXXXXXX.txt file in the "firmware-nic-*" folder. The actual name of the "firmware-nic-*" folder is based on the version of the rpm to be installed.  

  • To install the firmware, execute ONE of the following commands:
    • ./CPXXXXXX.scexe in the "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/scexe-compat" location.
    • ./setup in the "firmware-nic-*" location.   

  • To uninstall this rpm, execute the folllowing command: rpm -e <rpm_package_name>

Updating adapter firmware without installing the rpm:

  • Extract the contents of the rpm with the following command: rpm2cpio <rpm_filename>.rpm | cpio -id

This will extract the contents of the rpm to the "usr" folder in the current directory.

  • Navigate to the "usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-nic-*" location and run ./setup to update the firmware. The actual name of the 'firmware-nic-*' folder is based on the version of the rpm.

Additional Information:

  • The results of the firmware upgrade are saved in CPXXXXXX.log at "/var/cpq/."
  • The Device ID will change when NPAR (NIC Partitioning) mode is enabled. Accordingly adapters with DID 0x16D7 and 0x16D8 will change to 0x16EC and 0x16EE respectively if  NPAR is enabled but RoCE is disabled and to 0x16ED and 0x16EF respectively if NPAR is enabled and RoCE is also enabled.
  • Network connectivity may stop during the firmware upgrade process and may need to be restarted after completion.
  • Installing the firmware rpm package (rpm -ivh) does not update the adapter firmware. Installing the rpm merely extracts the rpm content to the local system. Updating the adapter firmware requires following the steps outlined above.
  • When upgrading firmware, refer to Revision History and upgrade it to the following version as stepping up the ladder until the version needed.

  • Run the Component on the host to be updated.
    The component will update the iLO 5 firmware and reset the iLO 5 processor.

  • Update status will be show in the Top and a log entry can be seen in Integrated Managenment Log (IML) 
  • Reboot the server for the firmware update to take effect.

  2. Navigate to the location where the CPxxxxxx.zip file was copied in step 1.

  4. Install the VMware component.

  7. Clean up the Smart Component:
    • a. Navigate out of /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxx to some other location. (Example: "/tmp")
    • b. To clean up the Smart Component:
      • i.For ESXi 7.0 targets: esxcli software component remove –n Smart-Component-CPxxxxxx
      • ii.For ESXi 6.x targets: esxcli software vib remove –n CPxxxxxx
    • c.Remove the directories associated with CPxxxxxx: rm -rf /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx
  8. If reboot is required to complete the firmware installation, reboot your system.

3. Flash from iLO GUI

  • Browse iLO IP using any browser and login using the credential 
  • Make sure the PLDM supported adapter is present in the server
  • Go to iLO GUI -> Click on "Firmware and OS software" from left side  -> Click on "Update Firmware" -> Click on "Choose File" and browse to the supported PLDM file -> Then click on "Flash" button. 
  • Update status will be show in the Top and a log entry can be seen in Integrated Managenment Log (IML) 
  • Reboot the server for the firmware update to take effect.

  • Login as root. (You must be root in order to apply the update.)

  • Ensure that CPXXXXXX.vmexe  is executable by using the command:

  • Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Creator Utility (find and download https://support.hpe.com)

  • Place the desired firmware packages and components to be updated in the directory "\packages" on the USB key.

Update the firmware and software in the usual manner.

Reboot your system for the update to take effect immediately

3. Flash from iLO GUI

  • Browse iLO IP using any browser and login using the credential 
  • Make sure the PLDM supported adapter is present in the server
  • Go to iLO GUI -> Click on "Firmware and OS software" from left side  -> Click on "Update Firmware" -> Click on "Choose File" and browse to the supported PLDM file -> Then click on "Flash" button. 
  • Update status will be show in the Top and a log entry can be seen in Integrated Managenment Log (IML) 
  • Reboot the server for the firmware update to take effect.

Additional Information:

  • When update firmware, refer to Revision History and update it to the version as stepping up or down the ladder until the version needed.

Updating firmware with rpm installed:

  • The CPXXXXXX.scexe script is located in the 'scexe-compat' folder. The actual name of the 'firmware-smartarray-f7c07bdbbd-*' folder is based on the version of the rpm installed in the first step above

Additional Information:

Installing the firmware rpm package (rpm -ivh) does not update the firmware.  It merely extracts the rpm content to the local system. Updating the firmware on the local system requires following the above outlined steps.

 

To use Smart Update Manager from the Service Pack for ProLiant:

Offline:

  • Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Utility for Windows.
  • Place the desired firmware to be updated in the directory, /SPP20xxxxx/packages on the USB key.
  • Boot from the newly created Service Pack for Proliant USB key.

  • Login as root. (You must be root in order to apply the ROM update.)

  • Run launch_sum.sh script which is found in the root of the ISO

  • The Device ID will change when NPAR (NIC Partitioning) mode is enabled. Accordingly adapters with DID 0x16D7 and 0x16D8 will change to 0x16EC and 0x16EE respectively if  NPAR is enabled but RoCE is disabled and to 0x16ED and 0x16EF respectively if NPAR is enabled and RoCE is also enabled.
  • Network connectivity may stop during the firmware upgrade process and may need to be restarted after completion.
  • Installing the firmware rpm package (rpm -ivh) does not update the adapter firmware. Installing the rpm merely extracts the rpm content to the local system. Updating the adapter firmware requires following the steps outlined above.
  • When upgrading firmware, refer to Revision History and upgrade it to the following version as stepping up the ladder until the version needed.

]]> Updating adapter firmware with rpm installed:

  • Install this NIC firmware rpm with the following command: rpm -ivh <rpm_filename>.rpm. 

This command will extract the contents to "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu."
The CPXXXXXX.scexe script is located in the "scexe-compat'' folder. Further information is available in CPXXXXXX.txt file in the "firmware-nic-*" folder. The actual name of the "firmware-nic-*" folder is based on the version of the rpm to be installed.  

  • To install the firmware, execute ONE of the following commands:
    • ./CPXXXXXX.scexe in the "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/scexe-compat" location.
    • ./setup in the "firmware-nic-*" location.   

  • To uninstall this rpm, execute the folllowing command: rpm -e <rpm_package_name>

Updating adapter firmware without installing the rpm:

  • Extract the contents of the rpm with the following command: rpm2cpio <rpm_filename>.rpm | cpio -id

This will extract the contents of the rpm to the "usr" folder in the current directory.

  • Navigate to the "usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-nic-*" location and run ./setup to update the firmware. The actual name of the 'firmware-nic-*' folder is based on the version of the rpm.

Additional Information:

  • The results of the firmware upgrade are saved in CPXXXXXX.log at "/var/cpq/."
  • The Device ID will change when NPAR (NIC Partitioning) mode is enabled. Accordingly adapters with DID 0x16D7 and 0x16D8 will change to 0x16EC and 0x16EE respectively if  NPAR is enabled but RoCE is disabled and to 0x16ED and 0x16EF respectively if NPAR is enabled and RoCE is also enabled.
  • Network connectivity may stop during the firmware upgrade process and may need to be restarted after completion.

  • Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Creator Utility (find and download https://support.hpe.com)

  • Place the desired firmware packages and components to be updated in the directory "\packages" on the USB key.

Update the firmware and software in the usual manner.

Reboot your system for the update to take effect immediately

3. Flash from iLO GUI

  • Browse iLO IP using any browser and login using the credential 
  • Make sure the PLDM supported adapter is present in the server
  • Go to iLO GUI -> Click on "Firmware and OS software" from left side  -> Click on "Update Firmware" -> Click on "Choose File" and browse to the supported PLDM file -> Then click on "Flash" button. 
  • Update status will be show in the Top and a log entry can be seen in Integrated Managenment Log (IML) 
  • Reboot the server for the firmware update to take effect.

Installing vib file : esxcli software component apply  –d <full path>/CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip.
Executing the binary from path “/opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx” : ./Execute_Component with command set options -s, -f, -e, -g etc. if required.

Removing vib file : esxcli software component remove –n Smart-Component-CPxxxxxx

  • Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Creator Utility (find and download https://support.hpe.com)

  • Place the desired firmware packages and components to be updated in the directory "\packages" on the USB key.

Update the firmware and software in the usual manner.

Reboot your system for the update to take effect immediately

3. Flash from iLO GUI

  • Browse iLO IP using any browser and login using the credential 
  • Make sure the PLDM supported adapter is present in the server
  • Go to iLO GUI -> Click on "Firmware and OS software" from left side  -> Click on "Update Firmware" -> Click on "Choose File" and browse to the supported PLDM file -> Then click on "Flash" button. 
  • Update status will be show in the Top and a log entry can be seen in Integrated Managenment Log (IML) 
  • Reboot the server for the firmware update to take effect.

Additional Information:

  • When update firmware, refer to Revision History and update it to the version as stepping up or down the ladder until the version needed.

]]> Updating adapter firmware with rpm installed:

  • Install this NIC firmware rpm with the following command: rpm -ivh <rpm_filename>.rpm. 

This command will extract the contents to "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu."
The CP056670.scexe script is located in the "scexe-compat'' folder. Further information is available in CP062142.txt file in the "firmware-nic-*" folder. The actual name of the "firmware-nic-*" folder is based on the version of the rpm to be installed.  

  • To install the firmware, execute ONE of the following commands:
    • ./CP062142.scexe in the "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/scexe-compat" location.
    • ./setup in the "firmware-nic-*" location.   

  • To uninstall this rpm, execute the folllowing command: rpm -e <rpm_package_name>

Updating adapter firmware without installing the rpm:

  • Extract the contents of the rpm with the following command: rpm2cpio <rpm_filename>.rpm | cpio -id

This will extract the contents of the rpm to the "usr" folder in the current directory.

  • Navigate to the "usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-nic-*" location and run ./setup to update the firmware. The actual name of the 'firmware-nic-*' folder is based on the version of the rpm.

Additional Information:

  • The results of the firmware upgrade are saved in CP062142.log at "/var/cpq/."
  • The Device ID will change when NPAR (NIC Partitioning) mode is enabled. Accordingly adapters with DID 0x16D7 and 0x16D8 will change to 0x16EC and 0x16EE respectively if  NPAR is enabled but RoCE is disabled and to 0x16ED and 0x16EF respectively if NPAR is enabled and RoCE is also enabled.
  • Network connectivity may stop during the firmware upgrade process and may need to be restarted after completion.
  • Installing the firmware rpm package (rpm -ivh) does not update the adapter firmware. Installing the rpm merely extracts the rpm content to the local system. Updating the adapter firmware requires following the steps outlined above.
  • When upgrading firmware, refer to Revision History and upgrade it to the following version as stepping up the ladder until the version needed.

To use Smart Update Manager from the Service Pack for ProLiant:

     Offline (The SPP Offline mode boots a special Linux OS environment, thus the Linux Smart Components are used, not the VMware Smart Components):

  • Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Utility for Windows.
  • Place the desired Linux firmware component to be updated in the directory, /packages on the USB key.
  • Boot from the newly created Service Pack for ProLiant USB key.
  • Follow Smart Update Manager steps to complete firmware update.

     Remote Online:

  • Download the appropriate SPP.
  • Add the component to the SPP.
  • Mount the SPP on a remote server running Windows or Linux that has a network connection to the ESXi host to be updated.
  • Run SUM.
  • Add the ESXi host to be updated as a remote target/node.
  • Enter IP or DNS address of the ESXi host to be updated Enter the ESXi host credentials (root or administrator username and password).
  • For SUM 6.0 and newer, select both the Additional Package with the added component and the SPP Baseline on the node Inventory page.
  • Follow Smart Update Manager Steps and complete the firmware update.

Additional information to execute VIB file.

Commands required to execute VIB file on ESXi 8.0/9.0

  • Enable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.
  • Login as root. (You must be root in order to apply the update.)
  • Place the Smart Component zip file in a temporary directory.
  • Unzip the file CPXXXXXX.zip
  • Installing vib file : esxcli software component apply  –d <full path>/CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip.
  • Executing the binary from path “/opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx” : ./Execute_Component with command set options -s, -f, -e, -g etc. if required.
  • Removing vib file : esxcli software component remove –n Smart-Component-CPxxxxxx
  • After removing the vib, we need to manually remove the folders using : rm –rf /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx

  • Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Creator Utility (find and download https://support.hpe.com)

  • Place the desired firmware packages and components to be updated in the directory "\packages" on the USB key.

Update the firmware and software in the usual manner.

Reboot your system for the update to take effect immediately

3. Flash from iLO GUI

  • Browse iLO IP using any browser and login using the credential 
  • Make sure the PLDM supported adapter is present in the server
  • Go to iLO GUI -> Click on "Firmware and OS software" from left side  -> Click on "Update Firmware" -> Click on "Choose File" and browse to the supported PLDM file -> Then click on "Flash" button. 
  • Update status will be show in the Top and a log entry can be seen in Integrated Managenment Log (IML) 
  • Reboot the server for the firmware update to take effect.
