Updating firmware with rpm installed:

• Install the firmware rpm using the command:  rpm -ivh <rpm_filename>.  This extracts the contents of the rpm to the '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu' location
• The CPXXXXXX.scexe script is located in the 'scexe-compat' folder. The actual name of the 'firmware-smartarray-xxxxxxxxxx-*' folder is based on the version of the rpm installed in the first step above
• To install firmware, you can execute ONE of the following commands:
  • ./ CPXXXXXX.scexe in the '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/scexe-compat' location (OR)
  • ./setup in the '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-smartarray-xxxxxxxxxx-*' location
• The results of the firmware upgrade are saved to the Component.log file, located in the /var/cpq/ directory
• To uninstall the rpm, run the command: rpm -e <rpm_package_name>, which is the rpm filename without the '.rpm' extension

Updating firmware without installing the rpm:

• Extract the contents of the rpm using the command: rpm2cpio <rpm_filename>.rpm | cpio -id.  This extracts the contents of the rpm to 'usr' folder in the current directory
• Navigate to the 'usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-smartarray-xxxxxxxxxx-*' location and run ./setup to update the firmware. The actual name of the 'firmware-smartarray-xxxxxxxxxx-*' folder is based on the version of the rpm installed in the step above
• The results of the firmware upgrade are saved to the Component.log file, located in the /var/cpq/ directory

Additional Information:

Installing the firmware rpm package (rpm -ivh) does not update the firmware.  It merely extracts the rpm content to the local system. Updating the firmware on the local system requires following the above outlined steps.

To use Smart Update Manager from the Service Pack for ProLiant:

Offline:

• Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Utility for Windows.
• Place the desired firmware to be updated in the directory, /SPP20xxxxx/packages on the USB key.
• Boot from the newly created Service Pack for Proliant USB key.
• Follow Smart Update Manager steps to complete firmware update.

Online:

• Login as root. (You must be root in order to apply the ROM update.)
• Place the desired firmware to be updated in the directory, /SPP20xxxxx/packages
• Run launch_sum.sh script which is found in the root of the ISO
• Follow the instructions on the screen

• Place the Smart Component in a temporary directory.
• Double-click on the Smart Component.
• Follow the directions given by the Smart Component.
• Reboot your system if you would like the update to take effect immediately.

To use HPE Smart Update Manager from the Service Pack for ProLiant :

• Place the desired firmware to be updated in the directory, \SPP20xxxxx\packages
• Run launch_sum.bat script which is found in the root of the ISO
• Follow the instructions on the screen

To use Smart Update Manager from the Service Pack for ProLiant:

     Offline (The SPP Offline mode boots a special Linux OS environment, thus the Linux Smart Components are used, not the VMware Smart Components):

• Place the Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the USB Key Utility for Windows.
• Place the desired Linux firmware component to be updated in the directory, /packages on the USB key.
• Boot from the newly created Service Pack for ProLiant USB key.
• Follow Smart Update Manager steps to complete firmware update.

     Remote Online:

• Download the appropriate SPP.
• Add the component to the SPP.
• Mount the SPP on a remote server running Windows or Linux that has a network connection to the ESXi host to be updated.
• Run SUM.
• Add the ESXi host to be updated as a remote target/node.
• Enter IP or DNS address of the ESXi host to be updated Enter the ESXi host credentials (root or administrator username and password).
• For SUM 6.0 and newer, select both the Additional Package with the added component and the SPP Baseline on the node Inventory page.
• Follow Smart Update Manager Steps and complete the firmware update.

To update firmware from VMware ESXi operating system on target server:

• Enable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.
• Login as root. (You must be root in order to apply the update.)
• Place the Smart Component zip file in a temporary directory.
• Unzip the file CPXXXXXX.zip
• Ensure that CPXXXXXX.vmexe is executable by using the command:

             chmod +x CPXXXXXX.vmexe    

• From the same directory, execute the Smart Component. For example: ./CPXXXXXX.vmexe
• Follow the directions given by the Smart Component.
• Logout
• Disable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.

Additional information to execute VIB file.

Commands required to execute VIB file on ESXi 7.0

• Installing vib file : esxcli software component apply  –d <full path>/CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip.
• Executing the binary from path “/opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx” : ./Execute_Component with command set options -s, -f, -e, -g etc. if required.
• Removing vib file : esxcli software component remove –n Smart-Component-CPxxxxxx
• After removing the vib, we need to manually remove the folders using : rm –rf /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx

Commands required to execute VIB file on ESXi 6. 7 and prior versions.

• Installing vib file : esxcli software vib install  –d <full path>/CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip.
• Executing the binary from path “/opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx” : ./ Execute_Component” with command set options “-s, -f, -e, -g etc. if required.
• Removing vib file : esxcli software vib remove –n CPxxxxxx
• After removing the vib, we need to manually remove the folders using : rm –rf /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx

<full path> is the temporary directory path where zip file was unpacked CPxxxxxx.zip
